Bio
Jim Lebo, K.C. finds legal solutions that protect businesses. With his detailed knowledge of the people and the intricacies of the court system, he guides his clients through every step of the litigation process with skill and proficiency.
Jim handles corporate commercial litigation, appeals, and arbitrations. He has vast experience in appeals for complicated regulatory proceedings as well as an interest in constitutional litigation.
His clients come to him for help with a range of issues in many industries, including construction disputes, oil and gas, product liability, utility and securities regulation, derivatives contracts, intellectual property, estates, as well as real estate and shareholder disputes. Along with his extensive experience in these industries, Jim has the ability to get up to speed quickly on any issue.
He defends officers and directors of companies, and professionals – including lawyers and engineers – count on Jim when facing liability claims. He has worked with clients on a variety of matters, from disciplinary proceedings against individuals to multi-million-dollar actions against firms.
An important part of Jim’s job is taking each individual client and basing his advice solely on their best interests. Because he looks at a client’s goals from a business perspective, his recommendation is often avoiding court completely and helping them find a solution through skilled negotiation or mediation.
If court is truly the best option for his clients, he focuses on a successful end game and creates a strategy to achieve it. After decades of experience in a courtroom, Jim has a feel for what works. He knows what to say, what not to say, and the right questions to ask. His 40-year track record speaks for itself.
With an active commercial arbitration practice, Jim acts both as counsel and arbitrator. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and has conducted arbitrations in several commercial disputes as both sole arbitrator and counsel as well as lead counsel with panels of three arbitrators.
Jim is an active and committed member of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) and has held a variety of senior positions, including serving as Alberta Branch President and a member of the National Council. In recognition of his long commitment to the CBA, Jim received both the CBA’s Alberta Branch Outstanding Service Award and the CBA SOGIC Ally Award in 2006. He is also on the Board of Directors of Lawyers Financial/Canadian Bar Insurance Association.
