Sue Remmer

Creative and thorough, Sue Remmer believes in a practical approach as to whether a situation requires litigation or mediation. With her attention to detail and talent for uncovering facts, she sees the big picture of a situation to find a fair resolution in complex litigation matters.

As counsel, Sue practices primarily in the area of insurance defence and has a particular strength in defence work on the personal injury side. She handles complex litigation, including fatality claims, serious personal injuries, SEF 44 matters, large fire losses, and property losses. Sue’s clients appreciate her focus and knack for finding important details in complicated medical and financial documents. To truly understand a situation, Sue dives into a file’s intricate nuances. She asks the right questions and uncovers the details of a plaintiff’s story to learn what makes them tick.

When a matter cannot be settled outside of trial, however, clients can expect a thorough and high-quality defence. Sue is a skilled advocate who has zealously represented her clients’ interests before every level of court in Alberta.

As a mediator, Sue brings an engaged, informed, and collaborative approach to problem solving to each matter she mediates. She is regularly retained to mediate insurance matters, where she draws on her over 25 years of experience negotiating and mediating as counsel. To further her mediation expertise, Sue has completed intensive dispute resolution training through the Strauss Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University’s Caruso School of Law.

Whatever the strategy, regular and open communication is an important aspect of Sue’s practice as both counsel and mediator. With her listening skills and ability to make people feel at ease, she enjoys strategizing with her clients to determine the best way forward. She takes the time to realistically assess the risks and determine a settlement.

Known for being warm, funny, and personable, Sue values the relationships that she develops in her work, both with clients and colleagues. She chose to join McLennan Ross based on the firm’s strong reputation for its well-respected insurance defence lawyers and its perfect size – not too big and not too small. She also believes in the firm’s culture of developing new talent and enjoys mentoring and helping junior lawyers learn how to grow and manage a successful practice.
