An experienced courtroom advocate, Ryan has argued cases before all levels of Court in Alberta, the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Court of Appeal for Saskatchewan, and the Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba. He has also acted for clients in cases in the Supreme Court of British Columbia and the Court of Queen’s Bench for Saskatchewan.

As a commercial litigator Ryan has successfully litigated cases involving alleged manufacturing defects, complex construction disputes, shareholder disputes, commercial leasing disputes, and contract interpretation, including class actions relating to these issues. He has also acted for clients in challenges to the constitutionality of legislation, including challenges to the constitutionality of the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act

Ryan has also represented clients before a number of administrative tribunals, and has represented clients through all stages of the public fatality inquiry process.

While Ryan’s practice focuses on litigation, Ryan also regularly assists clients with legislative and regulatory compliance issues, and assists clients in the drafting of warranties, supply agreements, construction agreements, and other contracts to minimize their risks of future litigation.

In addition to his commercial litigation practice, Ryan’s practice includes acting as coverage counsel for international and national insurers and litigation relating to commercial general liability insurance, wrap-up insurance, products liability insurance, professional liability insurance, directors’ and officers’ liability insurance, property insurance and motor vehicle insurance.

While Ryan is always prepared to vigorously represent his client’s interests in court, he recognizes that it is always in his clients’ interests to achieve a resolution that is timely and cost-effective. For that reason, Ryan is always prepared to consider and propose creative solutions to his clients’ problems, including attempts to resolve matters using the assistance of a neutral mediator or arbitrator. Ryan has successfully used settlement conferences, mediations, judicial dispute resolutions, and arbitrations to negotiate resolutions to his clients’ problems.
