She is also enthusiastic about work involving renewable energy resources and matters involving decisions by administrative tribunals.

A confident litigator and an oral advocator, Marika has appeared before Masters Chambers, Alberta Court of King’s Bench, and Provincial Court on debt collection matters, construction-related matters, and personal injury matters, as well as administrative board appearances. She leverages her experience to assist clients through settlement and mediation matters.

Marika is a tireless advocate. She works with clients to identify solutions that best suit not only current needs but also long-term goals. Calm and straightforward, she skillfully navigates complex issues while making the strongest case for her clients. She has applied this approach in defending shareholder disputes, participating in mediation, defending planning decisions before the Alberta Court of Appeal, and advising the province with respect to a major water management project subject to Natural Resources Conservation Board and Impact Assessment Act review.

Furthermore, she acted as second counsel on an appeal to the ABKB of the compensation awarded by the Surface Rights Board, and hearings on the AUC with respect of electric power facilities where she has worked on preparing written and oral submissions, witness questioning preparation and conducting direct, and cross examination of experts.

Marika’s experience extends to the preparation of application materials for the Alberta Energy Regulator and the Alberta Utilities Commission. She has prepared submissions to the AER in response to an appeal of reclamation certificates and regarding gas over bitumen matters and she has prepared a submission to the AUC concerning the calculation of line loss matters. She has also prepared submissions (an injunction and a claim) on behalf of a landowner to the Court of King's Bench regarding damages to land caused by a regulated irrigation system.

Additionally, Marika has often been called upon to assist with land acquisition matters. She has experience advising the Province on agreements with provincially and federally regulated utility companies and landowners as well as preparing land access agreements with local landowners. She is naturally skilled at preparing complex written opinions, assessments, memorandums, briefs, and written arguments for matters related to municipal and other planning decisions – skills used extensively whilst she defending a planning decision before the Alberta Court of Appeal.

Marika regularly shares her legal insight by publishing and presenting on various topics of interest to her clients.
