NWT Increases Minimum Wage

By Marie-Pier Leduc

On January 10, 2018, the Government of the Northwest Territories announced that it would increase minimum wage to $13.46 per hour on April 1, 2018. Minimum wage was last increased to $12.50 per hour in 2015.

This change is likely to most affect workers in the retail and services industry and employees in remote communities, but is not expected to have a large impact on employers or employment in the Northwest Territories. The Government of the Northwest Territories reports that only 700 people across the Northwest Territories are earning minimum wage.

The new minimum wage is similar to that of Alberta, Nunavut and Ontario.
