Emerging Issues in Human Rights Law: Accommodation of Employees in the Modern Workplace

Accommodation in the workplace is not a new concept. However, the needs of employees that employers are being asked to accommodate are continuing to evolve and change. In addition, the expansion of human rights legislation to add additional types of expression and personal characteristics which will require accommodation is on the horizon.

Staying up to date with respect to recent trends and developments in the area of accommodation is critical in assisting management and HR professionals to ensure that appropriate policies and tools are in place to protect their business while also meeting the needs of their employees and complying with legislative requirements.

Focusing on gender identity and expression, family status and the use of medical marijuana, presenters Maurice Dransfeld and Jody Sutherland will:

  • Review best practices for accommodating employees in the developing areas of family status, gender identity, and medicinal drug use.
  • Offer practical advice on policy development that will address expanding human rights protections.
  • Review other developing areas of human rights protections.
  • Provide general tips and best practices for responding to accommodation requests and human rights issues arising in the workplace.
