New $50 million fund to clean up gas station sites announced

01-Sep-06

An Energy, Environmental and Regulatory Law Update

On August 25, 2006, the Government of Alberta announced a $50 million continuation of its 2000 program to help municipalities and small retail gas station owners clean up contamination from old underground gasoline storage tanks.

The program, which is administered by the Department of Municipal Affairs, will grant to qualified applicants up to $110,000 to cover the cost of environmental site assessments and remediation of old retail fuel sites. An additional sum of up to $50,000 may be available to applicants whose sites are found to be heavily contaminated and whose remediation costs exceed the base grant. An additional up to $50,000 may also be granted to participants in the original program whose sites exceeded the base grant. Municipal Affairs has stated that the maximum grant available to any participant is $160,000, inclusive of grants under the first program. This maximum includes funding for both the environmental site assessment and remediation.

To qualify, applicants must be either municipalities or owners of small retail gas stations (five or fewer retail fuel sites) whose tanks were installed prior to September 1, 1992.

Participants in the first program will be notified directly by mail. Applications for new participants will be available on the Municipal Affairs website at www.municipalaffairs.gov.ab.ca starting September 15, 2006.

Further information can be obtained from the program office at 1-866-833-3300 or from the above website.
